Last week I gave up my beloved marmite on toast and sweet creamy date shakes for five days, and replaced my normal diet with five days of juices. I followed Jason Vale’s ‘5lbs in 5 days’ plan. A couple of years ago I followed his ‘7lbs in 7 days’ plan with good results – but I was doing a lot of exercise at the time and didn’t have so much weight to lose!
I realised at the start of day one how my lifestyle perhaps isn’t ideal if I would like to be a fat burning machine, as instead of my cosy lie in with munchkin, it was out of bed to do ’30 minutes of intense exercise’ before I was allowed my first juice. As the only exercise I have done in the last 18 months is dog walking and a little pre natal yoga, I thought perhaps a 30 minute run would be pushing it a bit. Instead I went onto YouTube where I found an ‘8 minute At Home Cardio Workout’ routine from the amazing Blogilates
Cassey suggests that if this is your only workout of the day then you should complete it four times. I think I’ll work up to that one! I did however attempt one of her ab workout routines too, which confirms that my abs are pretty much useless these days!
However, the work out was really fun, I felt great afterwards, and it really entertained Bill and Frey who both sat there staring at me jumping around the living room as though I was crazy.
After the 30 minutes of intense exercise, it’s time for the first juice. On this plan you get a ‘ginger shot’ in the morning too, which is half an apple and a slice of root ginger, which you down from a shot glass as if it was a tequila – it’s amazing, something I may well carry on with after the plan – it’s like nature’s espresso!
I completed the five days, and the juices were amazing. I really don’t have an excuse for making ‘green sludge’ smoothies any more after making these green beauties! Even the parsnip juice tasted good, as the recipes are formulated to have just the right amount of fruit to sweeten them up – and it really works.
So.. the results? I lost 6lbs in the 5 days, which I was so pleased with. Last time I did a juice plan I was told by a few people that I would put all the weight straight back on again – and I didn’t. That was because I was eating really well and training for a 10k. We will see if the weight goes straight back on again this time, and I hope it doesn’t.
Weight loss aside, I don’t think it can ever be a bad thing to flood your body with nutrients by drinking fresh vegetable juices for 5 days. There is a documentary available for free on the Juicemaster website called ‘Super Juice Me’ which I really recommend watching, it was very inspiring!
Moving forward, I am going to try to juice for two days a week, and eat my normal diet for the rest of the time. I will keep you posted on how I get on!
Update.. It’s now a month since I completed the plan, and I haven’t been able to keep up with juicing for 2 days a week. I was trying to follow the 5:2 principles and consume very few calories for those two days, which really didn’t work for me. However the good news is, a month on, none of the weight has gone back on and I’ve actually lost a further 1/2lb. I’ve been including lots of fresh juices and smoothies into my diet along with my other favourite foods. Great results!
