Did you used to get an orange in the bottom of your Christmas stocking? I didn’t, I used to get a little bag of chocolate coins. Which I probably preferred much more than an orange when I was a small person. Either way, oranges are very Christmassy. I remember making clove stuffed oranges on a school trip once, I had very sore fingers from pushing in all those cloves!
I was shopping in Lidl this week, and saw these giant oranges, so I thought I’d make some dried orange slices to add to my Christmas decorations.
Firstly, I sliced the oranges, then blotted them with some kitchen towel to absorb some of the juice. Next I placed them on a baking sheet on some baking paper so that they wouldn’t stick, then I sprinkled each slice generously with icing sugar. I put the baking sheet into my oven on the lowest heat and forgot about them for a few hours.
This waiting time was the best part of the whole project, because the sweet orange fragrance spread throughout the whole house, it was absolutely beautiful. If you ever want your house to smell gorgeous, forget about brewing coffee or lighting a scented candle, pop some orange slices in the oven. And that, coming from the biggest scented candle fan you could meet, is a huge recommendation!
I’ve popped my finished orange slices in a bowl with some cinnamon sticks – I also think they look very jolly with the candy canes.
