New Year Superfood Smoothie

New Year Superfood Smoothie

I know I said I wasn’t planning on over indulging over the Christmas holiday, but I do know that I’ve certainly put away more junk than I have the good stuff over the past few weeks, and I’ve started 2016 feeling very under the weather. I am a firm believer that health begins from within, and what you put into your body has a huge effect on how you feel, so today was ideal for me to get creative and come up with a new smoothie recipe, with the help of Indigo Herbs of Glastonbury, who kindly sent me some of their ‘Kick Ass Vegan Smoothie Mix’.

Superfood Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1/2 large mango
  • Handful of spinach leaves
  • Handful of strawberries
  • 1/2 a ripe avocado
  • Coconut water (or ordinary filtered water, I chose coconut water as an extra treat!)
  • 1 tablespoon of Indigo Herbs Kick Ass Vegan Smoothie Mix

The benefits

  • Mango contains vitamins B, C and beta carotene. It’s great as an internal body cleanser and stimulates the immune system, plus it has a lovely sweet flavour.
  • Spinach contains vitamins B, C, K, beta carotene and folic acid, along with iron and calcium. It’s great for supporting effective liver and kidney function.
  • Strawberries contain vitamins B, C, E, beta carotene, folic acid, calcium and iron and are another great immune system booster. Also, isn’t it a treat to have a little taste of summer?
  • Avocado contains vitamins B, C, bete carotene, calcium, iron and essential natural fats. Avocado has been described as a balanced diet in itself as it contains all six human nutritional needs in abundance, water, fat, protein, natural sugar, vitamins and minerals. Avocado also makes this smoothie deliciously creamy.
  • Indigo Herbs Kick Ass Vegan Smoothie Mix from www.indigoherbs.co.uk is one of the secrets of success for Taekwondo World medalist Sam Taylor, hence the name! It contains Spirulina, Maca, Banana, Chlorella, Chia Seed Protein, Pumpkin Seed Protein, Wheatgrass, Moringa, Barley Grass and Baobab.

The Result

A beautiful, yummy, thick and creamy smoothie that filled me up for hours and was absolutely packed with nutrients. I can’t wait to make another one in the morning and kick this New Years cold away!

I often add superfood powders to my smoothies, especially Spirulina, and I was amazed at the ingredients of this mix from Indigo Herbs. What a delicious and simple way to add so many superfoods into your daily diet.

Indigo Herbs created their Vegan Kick Ass Smoothie Mix especially for Veganuary. Veganuary is a global campaign to inspire people to try Vegan for January.

I’ve personally followed a plant based diet as far as I possibly can for the past seven months, but I have still signed up for Veganuary, and I’m so glad I have as their website it absolutely full of useful and inspiring information. There is so much to learn about Veganism and it’s benefits, and there are so many questions that you will have when you first think about adopting a Vegan lifestyle. Veganuary.com tackles most of them, it’s a fantastic site.

If you’re interested in some more vegan recipes, including more smoothies, have a look at my recipes category here at The Sparkle Nest. I’m planning on sharing some more recipes throughout January, to share how simple it can be to adopt a vegan lifestyle with just a few adaptations to your usual favourites.

You can visit the amazing Indigo Herbs and purchase any of their Superfood Powder Blends from http://www.indigo-herbs.co.uk/shop/buy/super-powder-blends.

Also, don’t forget to visit Veganuary.com where you can take the pledge to try Vegan for January, and find answers for all the questions you may have about adopting a plant based diet.

Looks good. I didn’t overindulge too much over the holidays, which shouldn’t be a valid reason to make an oink of yourself anyway. I’m doing what I did last year and cutting out more processed stuff, stick to more whole foods.

Thank you Ali, you’re quite right, but there is always so much chocolate lying around the place at Christmas time! Although I suppose there wouldn’t be if I didn’t buy the chocolate in the first place. I need to work on cutting out processed food too, I’m getting quite bad at that. This smoothie was a good start, reminds me that you actually feel great when you eat well!
